Flytipping fight gains success at common

RESIDENTS have successfully fought against flytipping in their village.
Information provided by vigilant people around South Hiendley Common has led to a prosecution for flytipping, and Wakefield Council and its partners have carried out extensive work to improve the area, focussing on reducing the problem.
On Thursday, November 1, Michael Nicholson of Cudworth, South Yorkshire, was prosecuted for dumping waste on South Hiendley Common, at Wakefield Magistrates’ Court. A resident spotted Nicholson dumping the waste and reported him to the council.
He pleaded guilty to the offence and was ordered to pay over £800 in fines and costs.
It is the latest success after a multi-agency focus on South Hiendley.
The council has worked with the police, fire service and Wakefield and District Housing to identify a number of issues in the area included substance misuse, anti-social behaviour, off road vehicle nuisance and fly-tipping.
The council’s anti-social behaviour unit, the street scene team and the South East NPT team came together to formulate a long-term plan to resolve the problems.
And additional patrols have been stepped up by environment officers, the environmental crime team and South East NPT.
Bunding was placed at strategic locations on South Hiendley Common to restrict access for would-be fly-tippers and off-road vehicles.
An abandoned caravan that was found burned out on the common was also reported.
Waste dumped has been and will be thoroughly investigated to help identify the flytippers.
Coun Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for the environment and communities, said: “There has been a significant reduction in anti-social behaviour in the area and we will continue to work with local residents and the police to sustain the improvements and create a quality environment for local people to enjoy.
Sgt Katy Woodmason from the South East NPT said: “We are aware of the issue of fly tipping in South Hiendley and have been working with our partner agencies at WMDC to target this problem.”
Anyone who witnesses fly-tipping or anti-social behaviour should report it to the police on 101 or to the council on 0845 8 506 506.
Offenders can face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to £50,000 for illegally dumping waste.
