A HEMSWORTH resident who has been seeking to get graffiti removed from garages across from his home for five years has made a desperate plea for it to be removed.

Neil Bashforth, of Grove Lane, first got in touch with Wakefield Council in 2007 after waking up and seeing the spray paint on the garages just off South Street.

But after five years of phone calls and meetings Mr Bashforth has had no response and the graffiti is still there.

He said: “It’s horrible. It devalues the area and if you don’t stand up and stop them then it’ll just get worse.

“The garages are straight across from my house and no matter who I approach they are just fobbing me off.”

Mr Bashforth, who has lived in Hemsworth all his life, was more angered when graffiti, which appeared on Grove Lane allotments, was painted over within a matter of weeks.

He said the graffiti was offensive and was covered up.

Mr Bashforth added: “I couldn’t care less what they write about - I just don’t want it across from my house.

“If they can do that at the taxpayer’s expense, they can afford to sort the garages.

“If the same wordings was on the garages, it would have been sorted.”

Mr Basforth, who has lived on Grove Lane since 1999, was first told by Wakefield Council to contact the Environment Agency five years ago.

But he was then told to contact the town council but they sent him back to the district council.

And after five years of trying to get the graffiti removed, it is still there and has been added to.

He said: “We do suffer with anti-social behaviour a lot because a lot of youths gather on the park.”

Hemsworth Town Council said that it did not own the garages or the land.

A Wakefield Council spokesperson said that it is working with its property and asset management department to identify who owns them.
