Firework yobs attacked train
Moorthorpe railway station to be refurbed. h7798a917
YOBS threw a firework on to a busy commuter train when it stopped to pick up passengers at Moorthorpe Station.
British Transport Police (BTP) officers are appealing for information after the incident during rush hour on Friday, November 12.
An investigation has been launched after the dangerous act was reported to police at around 5.15pm.
Insp Richard Price, of BTP based at Leeds station, said that a group of youths were seen at the station before the firework was thrown into the carriage.
He said: “It is believed the group lit the firework on the platform and threw it on to the train, where it exploded.
“Luckily no-one on board the train was hurt, but this could have caused serious injuries.
“What some people don’t realise is that it’s against the law to set off or throw fireworks in public places.
“Railway stations can be very busy especially during the time of this incident.”
Officers are appealing for anyone who might have been at the station at the time, on board the train, or who may have any information about the incident to contact police.
Insp Price added: “This was an extremely foolish and dangerous act.
“Throwing fireworks at trains is an incredibly irresponsible thing to do and we have stepped up patrols in the area to try and catch those responsible.
“We are conducting local inquiries into the incident and ask anyone with any information that could help our investigation to come forward.”
Anyone with any information about the incident and who or may have information that could assist police enquiries should contact BTP in strict confidence on 0800 40 50 40 quoting B10/NEA of 22/11/2010 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
