Fire at former Co-op building in Hemsworth

Firefighters tackled a blaze at the former Co-op supermarket in Hemsworth on Saturday evening.
Ten firefighters took 90 minutes to access the building on Market Street and get the fire under control. Andy Devonport,
Hemsworth fire crew commander, said: “We believe the fire was started deliberate. Somebody set something, probably rubbish, on fire outside the building at the side where it was boarded up.
“The building is quite secure and the firefighters had to break in. It took an hour and a half from start to finish to put the fire out and find out what had caused it.”
The fire is not being treated as arson by the police
Mr Devonport said: “There are people that will go out of their way to set fire to things.
“Incidents like this do take us away from something that could be more important.”
