Extreme challenge tribute to soldier

TWO friends will battle through fields full of live electric wires, underwater tunnels and nettle-filled assault courses to raise cash for Help for Heroes.
James Hirst, 21, and Billy Davies, 22, both of Upton, are venturing up north to take part in the Tough Mudder challenge – an 11-mile assault course with a difference - in memory of their friend, Rifleman Luke Farmer who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.
Rather than the usual climbing up cargo nets and swimming through ponds, competitors have to try their luck running through fields full of hanging wires with electricity running through them.
The event – advertised as the ‘toughest event on the planet’ - also involves swimming underwater through dark tunnels, and crawling through nettle-filled patches.
There are also obstacles that remain a mystery until the day.
The friends hope to raise £1,500 for Help for Heroes in memory of Rifleman Farmer, who along with Mr Hirst and Mr Davies, played rugby at Upton Rugby Club.
Mr Hirst, of Richmond Road, said the charity was close to his heart, and that in raising money they wanted to test their ability.
He said: “I am quite athletic and do a lot of running and go to the gym but thought this was a great way to challenge myself. My friend Billy told me about it so decided to do to it together.”
The worldwide challenge takes place in Australia, France and Sweden and only comes to the UK several times a year, including the challenge on July 14 in Dumfries.
It is estimated to take three hours to complete, but the men are hoping for a shorter time of just two hours.
Mr Hirst said they had been working hard in the gym and doing circuit classes in preparation for the event.
