Donor gives the gift of life
A DEDICATED blood donor has been rewarded for her life-saving generosity.
Sheila Jones, 64, of Hillthorpe Drive, Thorpe Audlin, was given the award by the NHS Blood and Transplant service in recognition of giving blood more than 75 times.
The retired primary school teacher began donating while at Swansea University 1966 in response to the Aberfan disaster, which saw 144 lives lost when a colliery tip collapsed onto the Welsh village.
Mrs Jones encouraged others to give blood.
She said: “It doesn’t hurt, it isn’t any inconvenience and you know you are doing something to help other people.”
She was presented the award by South Elmsall man David Copes, whose life was saved by blood donors after a motorcycle accident left him needing 40 pints of blood.
He said: “It’s fantastic what these people do. They give the most priceless gist any human being can give and that’s the gift of life. It is wasn’t for the 40 people that gave blood I wouldn’t be here today.”
