Discussions to sell town’s hall
A BUILDING that is home to community groups in South Elmsall is set to be sold.
South Elmsall Town Council agreed to negotiate with potential buyers about the sale of Weston Hall, on Westfield Lane, at its meeting on Tuesday.
Councillors decided to sell the building to help fund the on-going transformation of Westfield Resource Centre, also on Westfield Lane, that was purchased from Wakefield Council earlier this year.
Deputy leader of South Elmsall Town Council Bryan Capstick said groups would be relocated to the Social Centre or the Westfield Resource Centre once it is completed.
He said the reason for the sale was that it was in need of a lot of work to bring it up to standard and that cash would be better spent on the resource centre.
He said: “I used to attend Weston Hall in the early 1960s when it used to be a doctors and dental surgery and since then it’s not had any money spent on it since then, apart from the odd splash of paint.
“For us to bring it up to current standards, it would cost around £80,000 and the town council thought that money would be better spent on the Westfield Resource Centre.”
He said the council is in discussion with Saul Homes about the sale of the building.
The building was also a former office to the town council before the social centre was renovated, and is where the council is currently based.
The council took over the running of the centre in March and pledged to give it a £150,000 makeover, including education and training facilities, community hall, kitchen and cafe, office units and debt management advice. It is set to be completed by spring 2013.
