Diamond pair toast milestone
A COUPLE who have supported each other through tragedy have celebrating 60 years of marriage.
Theresa Appleton, 81, met her future husband Andrew when he was playing in a brass band in Northumbria, where they both lived.
They married when she was 21 on August 29, 1952.
The diamond couple have now lived in South Elmsall for more than 50 years after moving amid the miners strikes when Mr Appleton discovered and joined the Frickley Brass Band.
Mr Appleton, now 83, played for the band until he was in his fifties and also worked at the mine.
His wife dedicated herself to bringing up their four sons, including their eldest son who died unexpectedly aged 48.
She later worked at a butchers, and then a firework factory in South Elmsall.
The couple now have seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs Appleton, who suffered a stroke last Christmas time, said: “We’ve got through together very nicely.
“I’ve got a very good husband, he’s a good partner and friend - he’s been really looking after me while I’ve been poorly.
“To be quite honest I don’t know how we’ve kept it going this long.
“I think it’s just sticking together and you’ve got to make sure you don’t take each other for granted.”
Mr and Mrs Appleton’s main focus in life has been their family.
But they have also enjoyed many holidays together including visiting Austria, Scotland and Ireland.
They celebrated surrounded by their family last week.
