‘Despicable’ fly tipping

Russish left at South Hiendley church

ILLEGAL flytippers have dumped their unwanted waste in a church yard for the second time in just two months.

Bags of rubbish were dumped this week at the entrance of the graveyard at St Peter’s Church, Felkirk, South Hiendley.

It has sparked off outrage from residents, the police and Wakefield Council.

Inspector Geoff Carter, from the south east neighbourhood policing team said: “Flytipping is absolutely disgusting and is unacceptable. It’s despicable.

“It is an issue we are working on with the council to try and put a stop to it.”

Wakefield Council is now able to prosecute residents that do not ensure their waste is disposed of appropriately after new legislation was put in place last month - which includes issuing fixed penalty notices, fines up to £5,000 and court action.

Coun Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for the environment and communities, said: “Most people aren’t aware that if their waste gets dumped illegally, that we have the power to prosecute them.

“We want to raise awareness and prevent innocent people becoming victims because they are not properly informed.

“An individual has a duty of care to ensure their waste is disposed of correctly and we have visited different locations across the district to make sure this message hits home.”

Residents can report fly tipping by calling 0845 8 506 506.
