A SCHOOL is able to improve its garden and help its disabled pupils thanks to a donation from a supermarket giant.

The Asda depot on Elmsall Way, South Elmsall, has chosen Oakfield Park School, in Ackworth, to receive a £200 donation.

The store also donated £50 each to an animal welfare centre in Wakefield and Madison’s Dream, a fund to help pay for a sensory unit in South Kirkby in memory of a little girl that died.

The donations are part of the company’s Community Life campaign where they pledged to give community groups, charities, clubs and schools their cash and time to improve their areas.

Nigel Price, general manager as the South Elmsall depot, said it was their way of giving back to the community.

He said: “We always support the big charities but we are trying to break it down so we are able to help people locally.

“If schools need a room painting or a garden tidying up we will get someone there to do it. We are offering cash and labour to benefit the community.”

Oakfield Park received will use the £200 donation to continue work on a sensory garden.

The garden is used by children across the school, including those with various disabilities, to learn about plantlife and how to grow a garden.

Headteacher Wendy Fereday said: “The garden provides opportunities for our children to develop their garden skills annd learn about the outside environment.

“Asda really support us, they have donated to us a number of times.”
