Cycle race to miss district
Organisers of the Tour De France announced the route for the Grand Depart last week, which will see the first stages of the tour start in Yorkshire in July 2014.
Cyclists will pass through Harrogate, York, Sheffield and many other towns across the county, but the closest destination to Wakefield is Leeds, around 11 miles away.
MP for Hemsworth Jon Trickett said: “It is brilliant news that the Tour De France is coming to West Yorkshire.
“I know many local cyclists and cycle clubs are delighted they will have chance to see it as it travels through some parts of the county.
“The icing on the cake would have been if it had come through the Hemsworth constituency and Wakefield area. I am a regular cyclist and there are some fantastic routes they could have used.”
The first stage of the Grand Depart will start in Leeds on July 5, passing through the Yorkshire Dales, and finishing in Harrogate.
On July 6 the second cyclists will start in York and ride to Sheffield, passing through Knaresborough, Huddersfield and many more towns, before ending in Sheffield. The third stage will see cyclists finish in London.
