PUPILS got the chance to clown around for the day when they learnt circus skills good enough for the Big Top.

The youngsters from Moorthorpe Primary School were taught how to juggle, walk the tightrope and spin plates.

A clown started off the day with a grand performance showing the 60 children lots of different tricks and stunts, and then encouraged the pupils to take part.

The were also taught how to walk on stilts.

Teacher Claire Turner, from the school on Regent Street, said: “They absolutely loved taking part.

“It was a really nice way to end for half term.

“All the children really got stuck into to all of the different circus tricks.”

Teachers organised the day to celebrate the end of the circus topic.

Miss Turner said: “We thought it was a fun and unusual topic that we had never studied before.

“But it tied all different subjects together nicely.”

Pupils had learnt the science behind jelly setting – to go with the traditional custard pies that are thrown at clowns.

They also made moving models which were topped with clown heads in their design and technology lessons.
