Child’s play for new mum massage class
BONDINg, relaxation, and relieving post natal depression are just a few of the benefits of baby massage.
Little Owls Children Centre, on Common Road, South Kirkby, offers classes teaching parents how to massage their little ones to help improve many aspects of their lives.
Nicki Bossons is a parent support worker at the centre and teaches the classes which last just over an hour.
She shows how to massage babies using a variety of different strokes.
There are four main areas that massage is good for the baby - interaction, stimulation, relief and relaxation.
Interaction is important as it gives mums a chance to fully bond and communicate with their child.
Stimulation can aid the digestive and immune system, and can also help develop language skills due to the closeness of mum and baby.
Relief can help stomach cramps and colic.
And relaxation is important to help to improve sleep patterns and reduce stress.
Miss Bossons said these were all great benefits to the baby, but the groups were really valuable for parents too.
She said: “It can help improve confidence and self esteem for mums, dads and carers, as it gives them chance to chat to each other about problems they may have come across.
“They can then talk through things together and realise they are not alone.
“We have had some lovely feedback so it’s going really well.”
The group has been running around two years and takes place every few months in five-weekly blocks, with the next one set to start in the new year.
Parents who want to take part can register for free at the children’s centre. For more information, contact 01977 723868.
