A not-for-profit company, which provides support and accommodation to people with learning disabilities and mental health needs, has opened a new shop in Hemsworth.

28A Supporting Lifestyles, opened on Market Street and sells furniture, electrical items, clothing and bric-a-brac.

The shop is part of the company 28A Supported Living, which is based on Barnsley Road in Hemsworth, and was formed in 2003.

It manages around 100 properties and also offers help to disabled people with benefits claims and employment.

Director David Marshall said: “We have lost a quarter of our budget with more cuts to come this year and as a company we had to make a decision as to how we can make it sustainable.

“The idea is to be self-funded and not rely on government funds so the shop is a great way to bring funding in.”

The shop also offers opportunities for those it helps by giving them the chance to gain some experience working the shop.

Mr Marshall added: “We are looking at being a social enterprise and we are giving people the opportunity to get some work experience in the shop.”

Mr Marshall and his wife Julie Marshall first started supporting people in the community by taking them into their own home.

But the company changed to not-for-profit in 2006 after it began to manage properties across the area.

Mr Marshall added: “We rely on the public’s donations and we will take anything that we can legally sell.”

The shop will also collect any items which people wish to donate.
