CAVEMEN, wizards, sharks and gruffaloes were among the weird and wonderful creatures that turned up at South Hiendley J&I School last week.

Each class chose a theme based around different books they had been reading over the last few weeks and ditched their uniforms to dress up as farmyard animals, witches, wizards and elves, creatures from under the sea and Enid Blyton characters.

The fancy dress day was part of the school’s book week.

Children were also given the chance to buy different books from the Yorkshire Travelling Book Company, with the school receiving a commission to buy more books for use in school.

Lyn Cooper, senior office administrator, said: “We had some very challenging yet impressive costumes - the class of gruffaloes looked fabulous and we also had sharks, at least one octopus, pigs, turkeys and farmers running around school for the day.

“The children really enjoyed themselves - they love the chance to get out of their uniform. Even some of the teachers turned up in fancy dress.

“We also sold £172 of books. The schools receives some money back from the company based on how many books we sold and that is used to boost the number of books we have in class.

“The whole week was all about encouraging children to read by bringing the books to them.”
