A MANICURE to show off the newly rediscovered lost wedding ring was the way Ethel Hammond celebrated her 100th birthday last week.

Mrs Hammond, of Minsthorpe Lane, South Elmsall, reached the grand age on Saturday and wanted to mark the occasion with her first ever manicure.

This was to highlight her beautiful wedding ring she had lost on her 98th birthday - but by a twist of fate - found exactly two years later.

The former farmer’s wife was distraught after losing the gold wedding band - as she has never taken it off since her wedding to her late partner, Harry Hammond, at St Mary’s church in South Elmsall in 1938.

But her daughter, Jean Exley, was cleaning up at her mother’s home and came across a birthday bag in a cupboard. She emptied it and out dropped the gold band.

She said she had never even seen the bag before but for some reason it appeared as if by magic.

Mrs Hammond said: “I was over the moon we had found it. I felt lost without it.”

So to celebrate both her 100th birthday and the discovery of the lost wedding ring, she had her first ever manicure.

Her daughter said: “I think that was my dad’s way of showing us he was looking down on us.”

Mrs Hammond was born in Hooton Pagnell and moved to South Elmsall after she got married.

She has two children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Her daughter, Jean Exley, said she is a very independent woman and has just had a pacemaker fitted.

She said: “She has only just had it fitted so hopefully she will be here for another ten years.”

Over the years, she has enjoyed knitting and baking, in particular lots of apple pies.

She said the recipe for reaching 100 was to remain active.

Mrs Hammond said: “I just never stop, you just have to keep going.”

She celebrated the big day with a surprise party where family members visited from all over the country.

Mrs Hammond said it felt good to be 100 years old.
