Bid to create a South Kirkby youth community hub
FUNDING is being sought by youngsters who hope to transform a South Kirkby building into a community hub for children and teenagers.
A group of young people have lodged a bid for around 9,000 from the government's Youth Opportunity Fund for flooring, seating, a television, computers and kitchen facilities. South Kirkby Pavilion, on Barnsley Road, is currently used as changing rooms by football teams.
The youngsters approached Adam Redfern and his South Kirkby company, SESKU Learning and Skills Academy, for help with the project.
Emma Lakin, 14, of Park Estate, South Kirkby, said: "We want a youth club around here because there's nothing to do. It would be somewhere safe where we could have a laugh."
Scott Tonge, 14, of Burntwood Crescent, South Kirkby, said: "It would get us off the streets. I want a pool table and computer."
Mr Redfern said youth workers would also be able to run a sports camp in the summer.
He said: "We at SESKU feel a youth service isn't just about bricks and mortar. It's about the people delivering a service to make the community better for young people.
"This would steer young people away from getting involved in negative activity."
Mr Redfern said the idea had been backed by South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council, which owns the Pavilion.
Coun Laurie Harrison, head of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council, said: "Anything we can do to help youngsters is positive. It serves youngsters now, they play football there, and it has opportunities for further development."
