Bad weather delays Wakefield rhubarb run

WAKEFIELD Council has postponed its annual Rhubarb Run - due to take place tomorrow (Thursday) - because of bad weather.

The run around the 1.6 mile course at Pugneys Country Park has been postponed until March 16.

The event, which is held annually as part of Wakefield's festival of food, drink and rhubarb, is open to teams of primary school children aged 10 and 11 from across the district.

Each team has six members, each carrying a stick of rhubarb. The winning team is the first to have four members complete the course carrying four sticks of rhubarb.

Lisa Dodd, service director for sport and culture, said: "Given the continuing freezing weather we have taken the decision to postpone the Rhubarb Run, due to take place on Thursday, and rearranged it for March 16, when the weather will hopefully be much better.

"The event takes place at Pugneys County Park and given the current and predicted bad weather, we feel this is the safest option as the safety of all our competitors is obviously paramount.

"But as we have a new date already arranged we hope to see even more people taking part. Same times and venues apply to March 16 and all the schools currently involved are being invited to take part."

The delay does not affect any other part of the festival.
