Back to Upton rugby roots for writer John Godber

UPTON-born national treasure John Godber returned home this week to speak about how the village inspired him to write an award-winning play.

The playwright took the cast of his forthcoming 25th anniversary production of Up 'n' Under – including celebrity Abi Titmuss and former Gladiator James Crossley – to Upton Rugby League Football Club, at Quarry Lane, on Tuesday.

Mr Godber, who suggested a play about rugby when he was first interviewed for the job of artistic director at Hull Truck Theatre company, said: "This is the first place I ever saw rugby played and I felt we needed to come back here and see the game at grass roots level. Had I not been exposed to rugby here then I wouldn't have written Up 'n' Under in Hull, and Hull Truck wouldn't have become an Olivier Award-winning company. You could argue it all started here."

Up 'n' Under will be staged at Wakefield Theatre Royal from Monday, November 2, to Saturday, November 7.
