Author Barbara drops in for a chat

Author Barbara Phipps visited South Elmsall last week to talk about her first novel The Threlfalls.

Members of the South Elmsall Readers Group, were given an account of how Mrs Phipps wrote the book.

She spoke about how she established the story line and how she managed to get the title published.

The book is set in Leeds in the aftermath of World War Two.

And it profiles the life of a local publican who falls in love with an Irish girl.

They marry and have a daughter, who is spoilt by her father.

But as she grows up in Leeds in the 1950s and 1960s she becomes an independent, secretive woman who is not afraid of danger.

Jaki Spencer, of the reading group, said: “It’s very interesting to us as readers and we’re really grateful to Barbara for coming.

“This is something we are looking to do more often.”

Mrs Phipps, who went to Wakefield Girls’ High School, is currently writing a sequel to the novel as well as another book entitled Never Ask Why.

The group, which was formed by Marjorie Lacy, meet every second Monday of the month at South Elmsall Library.

Their next meeting is on Monday October 8 and sees the group celebrate their fourth anniversary.

Mrs Spencer said: “It’s a nice social event and the sessions are very informal.”

“We usually have a talk about what we’ve been reading and we take it in turns to chair the meetings each month so it doesn’t get too formal.”
