Annie celebrates her 106th birthday
RYHILL pensioner Annie Hartley does not feel her age – but the woman believed to be the district's oldest turned 106 on Monday.
When Mrs Hartley was born in 1904, Edward VII was on the throne and work was due to start on the Panama Canal in Central America.
More than a century later, she celebrated her big day with family and friends at Victoria House Care Home on Nostell Lane.
Mrs Hartley was married to Matthew, a miner at Monckton pit, who died 36 years ago.
She raised five children, Harold, Bob, Betty Bennington, Trevor and Walter, and has nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She said she had been in good health all her life and had never had a headache, drunk alcohol or smoked.
Mrs Hartley kept working until she was 73, saying she enjoyed working hard in her job as a cleaner and housekeeper.
She added: “I don’t feel any different. I don’t feel my age.”
Mrs Hartley praised staff at the home, saying: “It is marvellous what they do. I have a lot of good memories. You have got to laugh.”
In 2004, Mrs Hartley celebrated her 100th birthday with a special gift from family and friends, who bought her a garden seat and engraved brass plaque.
Mrs Hartley, who lived on Brunswick, Ryhill, also received a letter from the Queen and a card from her local MP, Jon Trickett.
