A SCHOOLBOY has gone to hair-raising lengths to raise money for charity.

Nine-year-old Alex Leafe, who attends Common Road I&N School in South Kirkby had his trademark long locks chopped off to raise cash for Madison’s Dream fund.

He had it done on Tuesday at the Hair Garage, in South Kirkby, where he has had his hair trimmed for most of his life.

Hairdresser Alun Down had the pleasure of doing of chopping off the 11-inch ponytail, after wanting Alex to have it cut off for years.

The youngster asked family, friends and school pals to sponsor him and raised £205.

The cash will go towards funding a sensory unit in South Kirkby - what the parents of little Madison wanted following her death from spinal muscular atrophy at just 17 weeks old earlier this year.

Alex said: “I was really upset that Madison had died, it was really sad, so I just wanted to do something to try to help.”

His mum, Julie Black, 27, said she was really pleased with her son’s efforts.

Miss Black, of Mill Lane, South Kirkby, said: “I am so proud of him, he has worked really hard to raise so much money.”

She said Alex decided out of the blue one day to cut off the hair he had been growing for the past three years.

Alex said: “I like my new short hair cut. It feels strange, but I think I will grow it back again.”

Miss Kendall attended the haircut and thanked the youngster for raising so much money to help towards their dream of building the unit.

They are nearly half way towards their £20,000 target.
