A bull's eye for charity
UPTON darts players have raised hundreds of pounds for the Prince of Wales Hospice with the help of former world champion Dennis 'the Menace' Priestley.
The famous player visited Garfield Sports and Social Club, on Waggon Lane, on Saturday to take part in a sponsored charity match. He saw off competition from 12 players, although local Glyn Chapman came close to beating him.
A further two games were auctioned off and a raffle and collection raised even more money for the hospice, which provides care for people with terminal or life limiting illnesses in Pontefract, Castleford, Normanton, Featherstone and Knottingley.
Sky Sports TV’s Paul Hinks compered the event, which was funded by Superdrug.
Organiser Trevor Jones, who works for Superdrug, said: “Everyone enjoyed themselves and was pleased to meet Dennis. He played 14 games and won every one, although Glyn came very close to beating him.
“Dennis is probably the best professional anyone can meet. He turned up early, stayed late and socialised with everyone – he is a great guy.”
