A 'better deal for youth' call from South Kirkby and Moorthorpe town councillor

A COUNCILLOR is seeking help from local authorities and youngsters to open a new youth facility in the South Elmsall or South Kirkby area.

South Kirkby and Moorthorpe town councillor Adam Redfern wants the proposed facility to offer social and educational opportunities.

He plans to consult with schools, local authorities and youth services, and is welcoming any ideas from the community.

Coun Redfern, who is also a youth and community development worker, said: "I'm hoping to create a facility for other organisations to deliver accredited courses, activities, residential trips and to give advice on employment.

"At present I'm mapping out the area to find out what facilities we have got and what can be improved. We will then be able to look for ways

to get funding.

"For the past 15 years the young people of ward 14 have suffered from a lack of suitable facilities aimed at youth provision.

"We need a five-year strategy to improve the existing services and identify gaps to deliver this provision.

"I have a vision for state-of-the-art facilities where young people have opportunities to engage in positive activities and informal learning programmes."

Anyone who would like to get involved can call Coun Redfern on 07783 986602.
