Normanton Town Council said it has been in negotiations with Wakefield Council for more than five years about the future of the building.

It now occupies part of the building on a lease from the local authority and has expressed an interest in taking over the building.

Wakefield Cabinet met last week and approved the possibility of the building being transferred as an asset to the town council.

Donna Johnston, Normanton Town Council clerk, said: “We believe that it could be better utilised for the benefit of our community with the Town Council in control. At this stage, the town council has agreed in principle that it would like to take control of the building and WMDC indicated that this could be done in a number of different ways including purchase, leasehold or asset transfer.”

She said the town council were meeting this week to discuss and consider the district council’s offer.

They will consult with town councillors and the public before any decision is made on the future of the town hall.

District councillors voted at the meeting last Tuesday to allow Normanton Town Council to rent the building for £1 per year. As part of that deal, the town council would take over responsibility for building repairs and costs if accepted.
