Minsthorpe Pool Action Group (MPAG) has launched a public survey to find the best location for a new facility.

Wakefield Council closed the pool down in April last year for essential maintenance but later announced plans to close the pool permanently. A district wide leisure review identified a need for the south east to have a pool, which was agreed by the council’s cabinet earlier this month.

The council has said it will work with local colleges and town and parish councils to decide on the best location for the new facility.

MPAG wants to consult with residents about the location to ensure the views of as many people within the community as possible are represented.

They launched the online survey earlier this month and will be distributing a paper survey throughout the town for residents who do not have a computer. The group intends to send the results to Wakefield Council as part of the planning process.

Andrew Picken, group spokesman, said: “We need to gather the community’s feelings on site options as soon as possible.”

Lisa Dodd-Mayne, service director for culture and sport, said: “We will be welcoming views gathered from surveys such as this, in addition to those received through the process to make sure that as many people as possible are able to have their say. Due to the continuing financial pressures we are under, we will of course need to consider the financial impact of the options provided.”
