A South Elmsall resident has spoken of her shock having seen the ‘laughing and giggling’ hen party getting onto the minibus this morning, which was later involved in a major accident on the M62 in which one woman was killed and six seriously injured.
Doreen Gray, 70, of Wynford Drive, was doing her shopping in the town and saw the women getting onto the minibus around 11am this morning opposite the bus station on Doncaster Road, South Elmsall.
She said: “I saw them all laughing and giggling and I thought to myself they are in for a fun weekend.
“They were all wearing pink, that’s what caught my eye. They were all in great spirits so it’s devastating to hear what has happened.”
Police have confirmed up to 20 women were making their way to Liverpool for a hen party.
Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett said: “It is dreadful news and my heart goes out to everyone concerned. It should have been a wonderful weekend, but it has turned into a tragedy.”
The minibus was involved in a collision with a lorry and a car just after 11.30am today, close to junction 32 at Castleford, near to Xscape.
Police also confirmed the driver of the lorry, a local man, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Air ambulances have been at the scene ferrying casualties to Pinderfields Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary.
The east and west bound carriageways of motorway have been closed from junction 33.
Police have said they expect to open the road shortly.
Anyone who is concerned about a family member or who has witnessed the collision itself is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police on 101 for information.”
