A community has come together to help the family of a little boy paralysed in a car accident.

People from across South Elmsall, South Kirkby and Upton are rallying round to raise funds for two-year-old John James Michalowski, after he suffered seven severe spinal injuries in March.

The family are aiming to raise £10,000 to help buy specialist equipment JJ needs outside hospital and The Express is backing their fundraising bid.

More than £1,500 has been raised through events and activities so far and there are more taking place over the coming months.

South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council collected money for the tot at the official Yorkshire Day celebrations earlier in the month.

Coun Diane Lancaster, said: “The entire community has been moved by JJ’s story.

“It is wonderful to see everyone rallying together when something tragic like this happens to a child.”

Upton Music Festival, taking place on Sunday, August 24, at Upton Rugby Club, is donating its proceeds to help JJ.

Funds from the charity festival were initially going to go to Helping Hands charity but organisers were so moved by JJ’s story, they wanted to do something to help.

Craig Tucker, a member of the charity committee, said: “As soon as we saw JJ’s story we just knew we needed to do something to help the family and as a charity all about supporting local people we decided to donate all the proceeds from the rugby clubs’s music festival to help JJ.”

JJ’s mum, Katy Michalowska, said the family had been overwhelmed by the support.

“You don’t realise quite how supportive and kind people can be sometimes until tragic circumstances like this.

“As a family, we have been overwhelmed by people’s kindness and are very grateful for everyone who is supporting us.”

A fun day will be held at Moorthorpe Recreational Club on September 21 and family friend, Kieran Hirst is doing an indoor bungee jump on October 4, at the Abyss, Magna.

Maddie Moos play and sensory in South Kirkby is hosting a mum and toddler zumbathon and JJ’s family is also holding a sponsored walk from South Elmsall to Hemsworth and back on August 23.
