Problem house shut down by police after reports of fighting and weapons

Residents of the house on Hoyland Terrace can no longer live there and no one else is allowed to enter the building.

The South East Neighbourhood Policing Team and Wakefield Council served the notice on April 27 after complaints regarding noise at the house and large gatherings of people on the street over a 73 day period.

Other matters reported to the police included the alleged possession of offensive weapons by people attending the house and fighting.

Inspector Geoff Carter of the South East NPT said: “While using powers such as these is a last resort, we will not hesitate to use them if it becomes necessary.

“It is no exaggeration to say the quality of life of neighbours in the street was badly affected by activity taking place at that house, and I want to make clear this is something we absolutely will not tolerate.”

Coun Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for communities, added: “Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home. On rare occasions we face extreme cases where we may have to take action for the benefit of other residents.”
