Police have pledged to take action if drivers do not cease their noisy nighttime gatherings at the town’s market car park.

And they have appealed for motorists to keep quiet after complaints of noise nuisance on an almost nightly basis at the car park.

People living nearby said at least a dozen drivers were congregating there at times and multiple complaints had been made to the police.

Insp Geoff Carter, of West Yorkshire Police, said people causing a nuisance in the car park were potentially committing anti-social behaviour or motoring offences and could face action.

Insp Carter said: “This is not just noise nuisance.

“We’re talking about noise nuisance in relation to the revving of engines which manifests itself in the potentially unlawful use of motor vehicles.

“I would say to them, please consider other people in your community when you go about your business.

“Please consider how your behaviour affects their quality of life.

“If people don’t adhere to that there is potential action we can take under anti-social behaviour and roads policing legislation.”

Insp Carter said the issue had been discussed with Wakefield Council’s Environmental Health department, which investigates complaints of noise nuisance.

Police said anti-social behaviour could be reported by calling the non-emergency number 101, or 999 in an emergency.
