Creative artists in South Elmsall are celebrating after picking up £100 from the Asda XDC Community Fund.
The Kickstart Art group was the first to be awarded the money from the new fund, which was launched in conjunction with the Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express.
The group - based at the Westfield Social Centre, Westfield Lane - will use the money to help fund two community projects. The first is a scheme to hang the group’s paintings in local nursing and care homes. The second project, organised to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, is to create a collage of photographs and artefacts with a poppy theme.
The money was handed over to the group at the Asda Distribution Centre, South Elmsall, on Monday. Kickstart Art aims to provide ‘art for all’ in a range of different formats. The weekly sessions, which can include demonstrations from local artists, are run on a self-help basis.
Eric Burkes, group member, said: “It is fantastic news, the group is delighted. The money will make a major contribution to the cost of materials for the production of the paintings and the artefacts making up the collage.”
The group meets from 10am to 12pm every Thursday. For more information, call Ann Burkes on 01977 640502.
The Asda XDC Community Fund will give £100 to a different group every month throughout 2014. To apply, email firstname.lastname@example.org or write to Gemma Jimmison, First Floor, Bullring House, 23 Northgate, WF1 3BJ. Groups must be able to get to the Asda Distribution Centre, Elmsall Way, South Elmsall, at 10am on the first Monday of every month.
