Honouring youngsters who go the extra mile

Inspirational teenagers were recognised for their achievements at a special awards ceremony.

The Horbury Breakthrough Youth Project Awards Evening took place at Horbury Academy and accolades were dished out to more than 40 youngsters.

It was organised by the youth group, which is run by Horbury Churches Together and organises activities for young people across the district.

John Walter, project co-ordinator, said: “The awards night was organised to celebrate young people’s success.

“Guests had an entertaining evening and everyone really enjoyed it.”

The awards evening comes after 14-year-old Aaron Daley took on the UK Three Peaks mountain challenge to raise cash for the youth group.

And the youngster was honoured with a surprise Special Recognition award after he raised nearly £1,000.

Mr Walter added: “When Aaron first suggested this I didn’t realise he meant such a massive physical effort.

“His achievement would be outstanding at any age, but at 14-years-old it is exceptional.”

Dozens of proud parents and carers packed into the school for the awards on July 8. It featured guest speakers Coun Janet Holmes and John Millington and compere the Rev Kim Williams.

The youth group was recently awarded a £300,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund, to spend on activities.
