Does your neighbourhood get its fair share?

That’s what the Express is asking as we campaign on issues facing the south and east of the Wakefield district.

As part of our Fair Share initiative we are looking into whether places like Hemsworth, South Elmsall, Pontefract and Castleford get a raw deal.

We’ve already investigated budget cuts at Wakefield Council which could see three children’s centres in the south east of the district effectively close.

Services could be centralised into Cedars Children’s Centre in Hemsworth while Sunflower in South Elmsall, Upton Children’s Centre and Little Owls in South Kirkby are transferred to nearby schools.

We also looked into rail services connecting your neighbourhoods with Leeds and Sheffield.

Transport campaigners said trains were overcrowded and too infrequent, preventing people from commuting to jobs and education outside the district.

Wakefield Council is hoping to get upgrades to Pontefract Monkhill and Castleford railway stations.

The council said it was also working with Northern Rail to improve the service which links Moorthorpe and Sheffield via Meadowhall.

Now we would like to hear your views on what else needs improving for people living in the Hemsworth & South Elmsall Express and Pontefract & Castleford Express areas.
