A gang of five men have been arrested after a man was found unconscious on a city centre street.

A 49-year-old man and a 39-year-old man were attacked by a group of men on Grove Street, at about 11pm on Friday.

One of the men was left unconscious after the assault.

Police arrested five men at the scene.

Detective Inspector Paul Harrison of Wakefield District CID said: “The assault lasted for some time and there were a number of people within the community who likely saw this assault occur.

“Both victims sustained facial and bodily injuries during the attack and are at present recovering from their injuries.

“If anybody did witness this event, I would ask that they contact us.”

Five men were expected to appear before city magistrates today (Monday).
