Football match raises £7,500 for good causes

A football fundraiser in Horbury has netted more than £7,500 for charity.

The Cricketers Arms scored a resounding 6-0 victory over Horbury Town in the tenth anniversary old boys’ game last weekend.

But the real winners at Slazengers Sports and Social Club on Saturday were the beneficiaries, breast and testicular cancer foundations.

Horbury Town vice chairman Simon Oakes said: “We would like to say ‘thank you’ to Andrew Hartshorne in particular. He has been knocking on the doors of local businesses in Horbury for several months and this resulted in us raising £6,650. This was topped up on the day by an anonymous donor to the magical round figure of £7,000.”

The current tally now stands at £7,625 but may rise.

Mr Oakes also wished to highlight the roles of helpers Phil Bradley, Emma Kennett, Derek Hanley, Joe Mosalski, Paul Howard and Debbie from the juniors’ section and Mark Alderson for the printing.

He wanted to publicly thank Slazenger’s Sports and Social Club for providing the venue for free and all the sponsors, businesses supporters and players who all put money in.

The chefs and staff at Bistro 42 were also praised for putting on a fine banquet of free food afterwards. The proceeds went to charity as well.

Mr Oakes said: “Everyone contributed to these great causes and even though our target of £10,000 wasn’t quite achieved, it’s a phenomenal amount of money raised to go to testicular and breast cancer research.”

Town’s manager Neil Fox said: “Congratulations to The Cricketers Arms. A great day was had by everyone, and the name of the game in this instance was a fun day to raise money.”
