Wakefield Post Office could be on the move.

The Post Office is planning to create a new branch in WHSmith in Trinity Walk, which would replace the current building just off Providence Street and Northgate.

And it has launched a six week consultation so customers can have their say on the proposals.

Roger Gale, General Manager of the Post Office Crown Network, said: “We are committed to keeping our services on the high street which we know is hugely important to people. This proposal means we can continue to do that, into the future.”

Wakefield MP Mary Creagh raised concerns about the plans and dozens of people signed a petition against the proposed closure on her website.

She said she was also concerned about the future of the West Bretton service.

She said: “With the closure of Ossett Royal Mail delivery office, Tory government cuts have led to a triple whammy for Wakefield’s postal and delivery services, hitting local independent businesses.”

The Post Office confirmed all existing staff would be given the option to transfer their employment to the new branch. And it said moving the service would benefit customers by extending opening times by 9.5 hours a week.
