Wakefield and District Healthy Hearts support group is the latest organisation to be awarded cash from the Asda XDC Community Fund.

The group, which runs an exercise class in Hemsworth, picked up £100 from the fund, run in conjunction with the Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express.

Healthy Hearts is a registered charity, affiliated to the British Hearts Foundation, that provides help and assistance to improve the health and quality of life of people who have experienced cardiac illness.

The group runs weekly exercise classes for cardiac patients who have finished NHS rehabilitation to help reduce their risk of suffering another cardiac event.

Healthy Hearts also provides coffee mornings with educational talks and support from health professionals, social meetings and fundraising events.

The money will help keep the Hemsworth class running as the group recently had to close another session elsewhere in the district due to a lack of funds.

Steven Broughton, who applied for the £100, said: “Until 18 months ago the group was a self-sufficient fundraising organisation mainly due to the efforts of the then chairman who, sadly, was killed in a motor accident.

“Although the group has continued to provide the exercise classes there has been very little fundraising and, as a result, the funds of the charity has reduced.

“The current committee is determined to take measures to improve the financial situation in these difficult times. The funds from this nomination will help contribute to the running costs of the class in Hemsworth.”

The Asda XDC Community Fund will give £100 to a different group every month throughout 2014. To apply, email gemma.jimmison@ywng.co.uk or write to Gemma Jimmison, First Floor, Bullring House, 23 Northgate, Wakefield WF1 3BJ. Groups must be able to get to the Asda Distribution Centre, Elmsall Way, South Elmsall, at 10am on the first Monday of the month.
