A bit of shopping on the Artwalk

Culture vultures will get the chance to see the transformation of five empty shops on Wednesday's Artwalk.

The shops on Wood Street have been taken over as studio spaces by ten artists from July 18 and 30.

The closed units were unlocked by Wakefield based social enterprise, WE ARE, which aims to provide a platform for emerging creatives through collaborative projects.

Amy Lilley, of WE ARE, said: “The July 27 Artwalk from 5pm to 9pm is an opportunity to see what the artists have been creating in their studio spaces and a chance to purchase some of their work.”

The shop scheme features recent graduates Jessica Kendall and Lisa-Marie Dickinson who will be using their shop to create new sculptural pieces. While Amy Hall, a jewellery designer, will be creating new pieces and running a pop-up shop on Wednesday. Friends Hannah Wilson and Josie Simpson are hosting a pop-up gallery, while Reece Chopping and Katie Lavin are transforming their studio spaces into a life-drawing room.

Rachel Watson and Kate Green have created a series of short films based around Wood Street which will be screened on the Artwalk. And Rosie Booth will be exhibiting a selection of her intricate metal engravings as well as creating new work.

Miss Lilley added: “Thanks to Woodhead Investments for the use of the space. It has given these emerging artists a platform and free space to develop their practise and exhibit work. The aim of the project is to bring Wood Street to life.”
