Youngsters at Grove Lea Primary School in Hemsworth are celebrating being chosen for a county-wide school games competition.

The school’s gymnastics’ teams have qualified to represent Wakefield at the West Yorkshire School Games.

Children from year three, four, five and six competed against eight other schools from across the district.

Sally Henshall, head teacher, said: “We are very proud of the gymnasts and wish them lots of luck at the West Yorkshire School Games.”

The Sainsbury’s West Yorkshire School Games take place at Leeds Metropolitan University on July 8. Staff and pupils also dressed up as their favourite Disney characters to raise money for a local dance school.

The fundraising event, organised by Grove Lea pupils and dancers, Ellie and Lucy Beaumont, was to raise money for Sugar Kane’s School of Dance who will perform at Disneyland Paris this summer.

Mrs Henshall added: “All the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the Disney dress up day.” The school raised £181.61 for the dance school.

Claire Kane, principal at the dance school, said: “I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the children and teachers at Grove Lea Primary School.

“I am sure my students will do them and everyone else in the community proud when they step out onto that stage in July. I would like to thank them all for helping us.”
