A NEW £200,000 facility has opened its doors to eager local residents in Hemsworth.
The Lakeside Cafe and Soft Play Area, at Hemsworth Water Park, was visited by excited children, families and local councillors on Saturday.
The facility is based at the former Windsurfer pub and has been transformed by Hemsworth Town Council at a cost of more than £200,000.
The pub closed in February 2009 due to a market downturn, lack of public support and anti-social behaviour but it is hoped the transformation will attract more families to the Hoyle Mill Road park, which already boasts two lakes with fishing facilities and pedaloes, a beach area, a miniature railway and an outdoor adventure playground.
The new facility, which will provide hot and cold drinks and cooked food, will be open seven days a week between 11.30am and 4.30pm, with extended opening hours during the summer period, depending on demand. The soft play area is suitable for children up to the age of seven.
Coun Tony Upson, chairman of the town council, said: “The opening was very well attended, both on the Saturday and Sunday. We are very hopeful that this is the missing piece of the jigsaw to make the water park a good all-year-round attraction. It looks very promising for the future.”
