CHILDREN have been applauded for building community spirit during a school project.
The Junior Warden Scheme at Brierley Primary School saw children raising awareness about the issues in their area, such as graffiti.
They also took part in activities with police and fire crews to learn about road safety, first aid and fire safety.
Headteacher Mike Reed said: “The children have found the past eight weeks very rewarding both in the participation of the varied workshops and also as a way of raising their awareness of how their local community is supported.”
The children were given certificates by Barnsley Council officer Caroline Cromack and councillors Dave North and Dorothy Higginbottom in an assembly on Tuesday.
Mr Reed also thanked Caroline Cromack and Paul Jolly from the North East Area Partnership, which organises the scheme.
South Yorkshire Police and the Safer Neighbourhood Teams, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Regulatory Services and Berneslai Homes were involved in teaching the children to look after their community.
