A West Yorkshire police helicopter was called out around 5am this morning (Saturday) after a driver crashed their car and ran away.

The person was travelling along Hemsworth Lane, Fitwilliam, when they lost control of a silver Peugeot and came off the road.

Mark Rust, watch commander at Hemsworth Fire Station, said: “The driver of the car was seen running away across a field.”

A helicopter was called to search for the person.

The damage to the car indicated it had flipped several times.

The passenger of the car, a man in his early 20s, was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
