A couple who met as teenagers have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Bernard and Monica Harper, of Clayton Holt, South Kirkby, met at the Gospel Hall in Little Lane, South Elmsall, in 1960 and married there three years later on October 5 1963.
The couple, who marked their golden wedding anniversary with a week in Majorca with family and friends, were also presented with a bouquet by the mayor and mayoress of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe, Eric and Joyce Tunstall.
Mr Harper, 72, has worked at a garage, in social work and has driven heavy plant machinery.
His wife, 68, worked at Barclays bank, in social services and as an IT manager.
Mr Harper said the secret to a happy marriage was “staying with it.”
“Disagreement isn’t about separation as living together is going to present problems. You resolve things as quickly as possible and move on.”
The couple have two children and two grandchildren.
