Runners in Kinsley stepped out to raise cash for the Lymphoma Association.

The ‘Great Kinsley Run’ event was organised by Hemsworth woman Julie Ritchie to help raise sponsorship so she and eight friends can take part in this weekend’s Great North Run.

Their initial sponsorship target of £2,000 for the Lymphoma Association has been reached but the group hope to increase that to £3,000 after after they complete the 13.1-mile half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields on Sunday.

Miss Ritchie chose the charity as a family member was diagnosed with lymphoma on Christmas Eve last year.

She said: “The run in Kinsley was a great success.

“I want to say thank you to Deborah’s Strike Academy for providing the marshals, Brakes in Kinsley for providing food and refreshments and Bev and Gordon at the Kinsley Hotel for letting us stage the event from there.”

Participants could choose between a 5km walk, 5km run or 10km run.

The 5km women-only race winner was Leanne Webster in 29 minutes 49 seconds .

In the 10km race the first man home was Joe Clarke in 40mins 41 secs and the fastest woman finisher was Miss Ritchie in 51 mins 1 second.
