A GROUP of keen anglers tackled each other in a fishing competition to raise cash for a children’s unit.

The SESKU fishermen took part in the contest at Screwby Top, Retford, last month.

Ian Taylor was the winner with a fish weighing in at a whopping 40.91lb.

Glen Oatsworth was second with a 36.19lb fish and Barry Newton gained third place with a 29.96lb fish.

The Moorthorpe Empire A team was the winner of the four-man category.

The SESKU club also organised a junior fishing match at the Owl Barn Fisheries, South Kirkby, at the beginning of September.

The overall junior winner was Jack Jones, who caught a 26lb fish.

The two contests raised £3,000 for the Children’s Unit at Pontefract Hospital.

Committee members presented Claire Anderson, a representative from the paediatric assessment unit, with a cheque on Thursday.

The anglers also enjoyed a presentation night at the South Elmsall Recreation Club to celebrate the winners’ achievements.

Steve Clarke, secretary of the SESKU committee, said: “I would like to say thank you to everyone who took part in the events and to everyone who kindly donated.

“I would also like to thank the committee members for all their efforts with the presentation night.

“We have been blown away with how well this year’s event went and hope that next year’s event will have the same level of enthusiasm and skill.”
