Hundreds of children will be waking up with gifts under their tree on Christmas morning, thanks to our generous readers.

The Express Christmas Toy Appeal 2014 has been a resounding success, with sacks full of toys and three substantial cash donations being handed in.

All the gifts are now being sorted by Wakefield Council’s family services team in Hemsworth.

They will be delivered to underprivileged, needy and neglected children across the Express area in time for Christmas.

Appeal co-ordinator Gemma Jimmison said: “Every year I am amazed by the generosity of our readers and local organisations.

“We’ve had a massive amount of gifts donated once again, along with several hundreds of pounds from our local councils.

“I’d like to thank each and every one of you who donated something for the appeal - you have all helped make Christmas special for the young children and teenagers in our area.”

Coun Olivia Rowley, the council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “The Christmas Toy Appeal reflects the true spirit of Christmas.

“Thank you to everyone who has been so generous in supporting this fabulous appeal by donating a gift.

“These wonderful presents will mean a great deal to many children and young people in the district, who otherwise may not have received a Christmas gift.

“It is fantastic that so many individuals and organisations have come together and been so incredibly supportive of the appeal.”
