AN EXPERIENCED mixed martial arts teacher has his gloves at the ready as he prepares to compete in a match that could see him crowned British champion.

Ian Jones, of Kirby Green, South Kirkby, will take on the challenge on March 25, but with 18 years’ training under his belt, he is confident he will claim the title.

The 32-year-old has taken part in competitions all over the world and is feeling confident.

He said: “I wouldn’t have taken it on if I didn’t think I could win.”

The sport – also known as cage fighting – is a combination of Thai boxing, Olympic wrestling, boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The competition consists of five five-minute rounds and if he wins, he will take home around £1,500 in earnings.

Mr Jones has recently started teaching mixed martial arts at Burntwood Community Centre, Church Top, South Kirkby.

He said: “Some people see it as barbaric but it require a lot of skill and hard work.

“It is great for giving people confidence and great for fitness levels.”

Classes take place on Wednesdays from 7.30pm and Sundays from 6pm.
