Entertainment with a bonfire bang!

Have your say

Guy Fawkes night falls on Saturday this weekend and there may well be some late comers in our concert rooms this weekend, as folk stay outside a little later to enjoy the fireworks.

But what awaits once people have left the bonfires? Well the answer is quite a lot.

Black Lace singer Dene Michael is seen on the telly these days singing the praises of a certain railway ticket website.

Dene also has a record coming out soon with comedienne and actress Crissie Rock of TV sitcom Benidorm. Crissie has just headed off to Australia to film I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and the record with Dene is coinciding with this further bit of fame.

Dene can be seen this weekend at Ferrybridge Progressive Club and I’m sure that he will tell anyone who wants to know more all about the project.

Local all-girl trio Sugarush are in Pontefract this weekend for a Sunday evening visit to Pontefract Sports and Social Club, which used to be known as the Labour Club.

I have promised to go along and catch this act soon and, if I don’t make it this weekend, I will definitely be dropping in to catch the girls in action soon.

Outstanding two-boy act Brotherhood are the star attraction at Crigglestone WMC this weekend when the lads make a Saturday night visit.

These guys spend much of the summer entertaining at many of the Spanish sunshine hot-spots, but I’m sure that the welcome at Crigg will be equally warm.

Outwood WMC has always been a favourite club of mine to visit. This month’s list of star attractions for Saturday and Sunday nights makes impressive reading with the likes of Ricky Graham, Kevin Kane and JJ Benjamin all lined up to appear.

The very witty and entertaining JJ pops up on stage this weekend on Saturday night and a great night is assured.

I chatted to Brian and Janet Cunningham last weekend. This lovely couple have just taken over again behind the bar at Ladybalk Social Club in Pontefract and they tell me that everything is going very well so far.

This club stage Friday concert nights and I shall be going down Ladybalk Lane to say hello again one Friday night very soon.

The Leroy Johnson Band play indie pop material and love to rock any venue they play. These guys can be seen on stage on Bonfire Night at Alverthorpe WMC and I’m sure the gig will see a packed house and a happy crowd. Don’t be late!

Friday night sees a night to remember in Pontefract for Stax and soul fans as The Solicitors are set to pop up on stage at Halfpenny Lane Club this weekend. These guys really can play and I know that the people running this place are keen as mustard to make this club profitable and well supported again.

Comedienne Janice Yorke is the star of the show at Ossett Central Club this weekend as this funny lady takes the stage on Saturday night.

Singer Robert Greene makes up the double bill show and I’m sure the place will be packed for this one.

In next week’s column I shall be dedicating much of the content to covering the annual concert secretary’s federation command show, which took place earlier this week. This annual jamboree of local talent was staged at Carlton WMC in Rothwell and, if you didn’t get along to support the event, rest assured you can read all about it right here in the Express.

Iif you have any news or views for this column we would like to hear from you. Just drop me a line at the Express, email mark-ritchie@btconnect.com or call my office number on 01924 890800 and leave a message.
