Division One leaders Hemsworth MW took another step closer to promotion in the Toolstation NCE League as they beat fellow top four side Shirebrook Town 2-1 last Saturday.
Shirebrook came into the game in decent form and in third place, but their hopes of closing the gap on the runaway leaders were hit early on as Wells striker Danny Critchlow netted his 21st goal of the season.
Shane Kelsey doubled the lead with his 17th of the campaign, but Jake Currie kept Shirebrook in the contest with a goal two minutes before half-time.
However, they were unable to find the net again in the second half as Hemsworth stayed strong to see the match out for another important three points.
Welfare were also in action on Tuesday night against Hull United in an away game switched to the MDC Stadium and were in winning form again.
A 3-1 victory took Wayne Benn’s men 14 points clear of second-placed AFC Mansfield with both teams having 10 matches left to play.
Nash Connolly, with his 13th goal of the season and skipper Jason Yates, with a penalty, were on target to go with an own goal.
Hemsworth are without a game this Saturday, but return to action next Wednesday when they travel to play Eccleshill United (kick-off 7.45pm).
Down in 14th place after last weekend’s matches, Eccleshill have already suffered at the hands of Wells as they were beaten 4-0 at the MDC Stadium back in August.
