South Elmsall man ‘brutally murdered’ by gang

A SOUTH Elmsall man was ‘brutally murdered’ by five men who repeatedly kicked him in the head and hit him with a pick axe handle, a court has heard.

Ian Mark Smith, 22, of Boycott Way, died from head injuries following the attack on Barnsley Road, also in South Elmsall, in the early hours of Saturday, February 19.

John Simon Richardson, 23, of Kinsley House Crescent, Fitzwilliam, has pleaded guilty to murder. His father, John Dean Richardson, 44, of Wakefield Road, Fitzwilliam, Neil Brown, 29, and Bradley Jake Parkin, 22, both of Mallard Mews, South Elmsall, and Liam Mark Ackroyd, 22, of Bell Lane, Ackworth, all deny murder and violent disorder.

Leeds Crown Court heard on Thursday that Mr Smith had been out drinking in South Elmsall on Friday, February 18, and an argument broke out between him and Richardson Senior.

The court heard how Mr Smith punched Richardson to the ground before the four other men got involved and chased Mr Smith.

Richardson Junior used the plastic handle of a pick axe to hit Mr Smith.

Prosecutor Julian Goose said: “Ian Smith was brutally murdered when five men attacked him. He was repeatedly kicked to the head, neck and upper part of his body. This was an extremely violent killing of a young man.”

The trial continues.
